Tilo Schulz
*1972, Leipzig. Lives in Leipzig. Photographic Documentation and Archive of Manifesta 2: Roman Mensing, Münster (installation in situ), 1998 The city's surface is covered with a text which, unlike regular signs, neither provides information nor orientation. Whether appearing at a bus stop, in a bar, or on a signpost, its content remains autonomous. Combined with the use of a particular design it establishes an obvious relationship with each location. It does not lend itself to simple-minded interpretations, but rather requires an act of emancipation from the passer-by. It is at once a promotion of literary practice, an intervention into reading habits, a published text and a creation in urban space. With this fragmented discourse, Tilo Schulz stages a different - semiotic - urban identification.
