A Quest for a Woman - A Work in Progress, 1998 (film installation)
In "A Quest for a Woman", Eija-Liisa Ahtila enacts the fiction of the history of creation, the myth of identity and the reality of alienation. In the loneliness of his studio flat, Aki V. begins his quest for a true encounter, and makes appear Anne Nyberg, his future fiancée . Because of his gradually increasing split of personality, virtual appearance becomes ever more real and to such an extent that only a divine authority can coexist with it. In a total isolation which excludes all social and occupational activities, Aki plays a clever game of intelligence and emotion that takes him beyond the borders of perception... The associations, overlappings and dissociations of such a process are reflected in the formal, spatial and chronological realisation of the different levels of representation as defined by the screens.
