Peter Land
*1966, Aarhus. Lives in Copenhagen. Photographic Documentation and Archive of Manifesta 2: Roman Mensing, Münster The staircase, 1998 (video installation) In the basement of the C.P.C.A. in Bonnevoie, Peter Land has created a new video installation in two parts. In one part, a film features a man (the artist himself) who, in a constantly repeated and endless movement, falling down a flight of stairs. In the other part, a starry sky appears in a seemingly immobile long-term temporality. With very simple technical means, Peter Land succeeds in giving a new refreshing meaning to the tradition of body art. Seriousness and moralising gestures are abandoned on behalf of humour, self-mockery, and a keen eye for the situation of man at the end of the 20th century. His video is an immediate metaphor of the most various feelings. At the same time, his interest in the human body arises from an entirely sculptural interest. Peter Land is like a sculptor who, rather than relying on the traditional means of sculpture, prefers the fluid medium of the moving image and the human action.
