Trail Error, 1998 (sound installation)
Franz Pomassl is a trained painter. He was a student with Arnulf Rainer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, but has also studied music. For years he has been painting, so he says himself, using only acoustic material. During extensive research which he did partially on behalf of de Austrian Academy of Sciences, the artist has developed electro-acoustic machines and devices transforming the visitor's acoustic, spatial and physical experiences in a room. His acoustic installations are entirely conceived according to a particular space and its physical parameters. The effect produced by his work often arises from the use of wave lengths which cannot be heard by the human ear.
For Manifesta 2, Franz Pomassl has specially designed an installation for the ground floor of the C.P.C.A. in Bonnevoie. "Trail Error" is a music CD playing 76.42 minutes of "feedbacks", system breakdowns and freely developing rhythms and effects produced by the sound machine itself, irritating, paradoxical and contradictory digitalized elements. The amplifiers, the sound machines and the loudspeakers are the visible elements of his installation on the ground floor of the C.P.C.A. building.
