Ann-Sofi Sidén
*1962, Stockholm. Lives in New York. Photographic Documentation and Archive of Manifesta 2: Roman Mensing, Münster Who Told the Chamber Maid?, 1998 (mixed media) In Ann-Sofi Sidén's work the hotel becomes both scenery and script. The hotel as a stage hosting an infinite number of performances is the appropriate place to look behind the scenes of public life and discover the private sphere. Human experience is shown as unbiased reality in the control room of a camera surveillance system - including the painful moments of weakness and the voluptuous moments of sin. All of it has been filmed in a Luxembourg hotel. The video recording is the proof that appearance is not everything. The artist has conceived this installation while working on film projects, the unreal and suffocating atmosphere of which call into question the concept of reality. The omnipresence of monitor screens, fed with cut sequences played over and over again, generate an impression of confusion that makes the viewer lose all sovereignty.
