Juice Bar (installation), 1998

Apolonija Sustersic is an architect and visual artist. She analyses spaces in which she changes even the most typological features through the realisation of progressive installations. The perception of time is one of the major concerns of her work. Her repeated project collaborations with Dan Graham explain the origin and political awareness of her work.
For Manifesta, Apolonija Sustersic has designed a "Juice Bar". As a sculpture, it acts as a communicative link that changes the architecture of the C.P.C.A. in Bonnevoie, an infrastructure used for the first time as an exhibition space for art. "Juice Bar" alludes to the building's transformations, from a fruit and vegetable store to a carpentry and eventually to an exhibition space (and subsequently to a dance theatre). These repeated changes of identity and the corresponding transition periods of emptiness and shallowness - have had repercussions on the neighbouring area and its everyday life.
Through its many transformations, Bonnevoie's future arts centre in the heart of the area around the railway station takes in a very special place. "Juice Bar" gives the residents of the neighbourhood access to the building and to Manifesta 2, and thereby creates a space of communication within the exhibition itself. A video programme will inform the public about the history of the area.
