The full burn, 1998 (performance)
On 27 June 1998, on the day of the official opening of Manifesta 2, Piotr Uklanski stages a performance in the entrance hall of the Casino Luxembourg in the course of which a film stuntman hired by Uklanski is set on fire. The performance remains in the exhibition through the traces it has left. The sight of a burning man will have seen a brief traumatic experience for the public witnessing it on the spot. A video film and photographs document the event.
Piotr Uklanski's work explores the fields of painting and photography, as well as the borderland between design, sculpture and environment. Although the performance of the burning stuntman was conceived a long time ago, it represents, in this special context, the artistıs reaction to the peculiar situation induced by a large international exhibition with many participants.
